Take the Two Mile Challenge in October!

Registration is now open for the Two Mile Challenge! Half of all trips made by car are less than two miles. The Two Mile Challenge is to leave the car at home for some, most, or even all of these short trips during the month of October. Improve your fitness, save money on gas, and reduce your environmental impact at the same time!

If two miles sounds like too much (or it’s not enough!), then we want you to create your own personal challenge. There are only 3 rules:
1. Your challenge must feature active transportation, like bicycling or walking. Or pogo sticks. Or skateboard. Or a non-motorized wheelchair.
2. Your challenge must be a challenge to you. If you never bike or walk anywhere, you might start with a half-mile challenge, or go for the two mile challenge but only 3 days a week. But if you bike and walk everywhere already, consider something more strenuous like a No Car Challenge!
3. You have to write about your experience at least once a week on our forum. This is fun, a great way to meet other people who bike and walk, and will motivate and encourage you to stick to your challenge. You might see some of your fellow Two Milers while you’re walking and biking around town!

Our Two Mile Challenge Team will be available to give support, answer questions, and help plan your personal challenge. Kids to transport? Need to look good at work? Too much stuff to carry without a car? Live too far away? We have experience getting creative to incorporate active transportation into our daily lives, and still smelling good afterwards!

If you are concerned about traffic, we’ll be teaching a Traffic Skills 101, the bicycle class developed by the League of American Bicyclists and taught by league-certified instructors. We are offering this class to participants for only $20, an extreme discount and just to cover the cost of materials, on Sunday, Sept. 25 from 9:00 am - 6:00 pm at the Kirksville High School.

The registration fee for the Two Mile Challenge is only $10 ($15 for family), and we’re offering some scholarships. In addition to free consulting to develop your personal challenge, we’ll organize several social walks and rides throughout the month so you’ll have more opportunities to bike and walk, more opportunities to meet other participants, and get to know the routes for getting around town by foot or pedal.

You can get started designing your challenge with help from our FAQ.

At the end of the month, we’ll have a party for all the participants! You’ll get to meet the people you’ve been blogging with all month. Everyone will get a Participation Packet with coupons and freebies. There will be prizes in several categories, such as Most Miles Biked, Most Miles Walked, Most Extreme, Most Dramatic Change, and more.

Great that you are doing this :)

We have already gone "car free", so it probably wouldn't be fair for us to enter (unless you have a "Least Dramatic Change" category, LOL). I wish you great luck with it though!

Absolutely you can enter even

Absolutely you can enter even if you are already car free or car lite. The challenge is tailored to each participant. Rule #2: It has to be a challenge to YOU. If you are already car free, try to incorporate a few extra walks or rides into your October, perhaps join us for some of the social rides and walks.

And who knows, there may well be a "Least Dramatic Change" category!
